Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a neurological scale which aims to give a reliable and objective way of recording the conscious state of a person for initial as well as subsequent assessment.
GCS is widely used in medical coma, but disorders that affect language or limb function(eg. Left Hemispheric Stroke, Locked-in syndrome) may reduces its usefulness. This scale helps to gauge the impact of a wide variety of conditions such as acute brain damage due to traumatic and/or vascular injuries or infections, metabolic disorders (e.g., hepatic or renal failure, hypoglycemia, diabetic ketosis), etc.
Severity :
Severe ----GCS score of 8 or less
Moderate ----GCS score of 9 to 12
Mild ----GCS score of 13 to 15
